Hungarian National Office for Research and Technology signed agreement with MMPharma™ (www.mmpharma.com) consortium in October 2007 on 1.2 million Euros financial support of the consortium’s 3 year drug discovery program for Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibitors (MMPIs) for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The consortium, consisting 3 biotech companies and 3 academic research groups, was initiated in 2005 by Pharmahungary™ (Szeged, Hungary) a young innovative company active in preclinical and clinical pharmacological services, when Dr. Péter Ferdinandy, CEO and founder of Pharmahungary™, and his academic research group published that MMPIs might mimic endogenous cardioprotection, therefore, MMPIs can be used to reduce infarct size in normal and hyperlipidemic animal models. InFarmatik (Budapest, Hungary), a supplier of chemical products and services since 1999 for drug discovery programs for biotech/pharma companies was invited to participate in the MMPharma consortium, to act as a chemistry engine for the MMPharma project. OntoChem a German chemoinformatic company was contracted to use its proprietary tools to facilitate design phase of MMPharma drug discovery.
I am convinced, Dr. Péter Ferdinandy CEO of Pharmahungary says, that we can finish this MMPI program successfully. The consortium has all specialized expertise for from in silico chemistry to preclinical pharmacology. E.g. InFarmatik has the diversity of building blocks and scaffolds sufficient for generating novel leads with firm IP rights. This collaboration can establish an efficient R&D consortium which can extend research for other therapeutic fields which Pharmahungary wishes to explore in the future.
I believe, Dr. László Kovacs, CEO of InFarmatik states, that MMPharma project is a good opportunity to show InFarmatik’s efficiency in performing complex services in drug discovery projects. Dr. Lutz Weber CEO of OntoChem (Halle, Germany) confirms that the results from cardiovascular MMPI projects can be successfully applied on other important areas like neurodegenerative and anticancer fields.
The consortium’s newly launched website (www.MMPharma.com) introduces the objectives of the consortium and shows early non-confidential results.
