CARDIOSTELLAR – Development of cardiovascular test systems to predict drug response in space
Long-duration space travel presents serious risks to cardiovascular health, including unpredictable response to certain drugs. New technologies in regenerative medicine using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) offers promising, adaptable solutions. Our interdisciplinary project develops a closed bioreactor system with nanofiber scaffolds and real-time biosensing to produce and study myocardial and endothelial cells under microgravity aboard the ISS. This work aims to advance personalized regenerative therapies and drug testing for space missions while delivering valuable insights for tissue engineering and cardiovascular drug safety back on Earth.
